Guiding the Ship: Five Essential Leadership Practices

Summary:

In this video, Kerry delves into the five key leadership practices essential for steering a team toward success. These practices act as a roadmap for leaders aiming to guide their teams effectively. The practices include giving clear direction, crafting a compelling vision that goes beyond mere words on a wall, providing the necessary tools for success, embracing the concept of letting go the vine (inspired by an EOS story about courage and trust), and acting with the greater good in mind. Kerry emphasises the importance of walking the talk and concludes with the practice of “sharpening the saw,” a concept from Stephen Covey’s seven habits.

The five leadership practices that I want to share are: giving clear direction, creating a compelling vision, and the vision for the company where it’s not fancy words on a wall, it’s where we want to go what we want to actually achieve. So, we need to be able to explain that clearly and to be able to cascade it right throughout the business.

The next is providing the necessary tools. In other words, what technology do people need and what training do they need within that, what personal training do they need, what should I do, in order to let go of the vine more so the people run the business?

Those amongst us who have done a little bit of EOS will know the story of letting go of the vine, for those who don’t, there is a leader who was just fallen over the edge of a cliff accidentally, and he is clinging on to this piece of vine for dear life, and in desperation, decides to look up to the clouds and say, “Is there anybody out there?”

A voice booms down and says, “Yes, I’m here”, and the leader replies “Can you help me?”, and the voice replies “Yes, I can. Let go of the vine”.   The leader who’s hanging on to the vine decides, that isn’t the answer he wants, so turns the other way and says “anyone else around?”

This is a little story that’s throughout EOS, which is about letting go of the vine. You have to have the courage to be able to do that, to be able to let your people take over. And then, of course, act with the greater good in mind, which is walking the talk, and of course, sharpening the saw or taking clarity breaks. That’s what Stephen Covey talked about as well as the seven habits.
